What do we know about Kelsey Martin and Hali Helms, UW-Platteville students who died

Details of the lives of two students from the University of Wisconsin-Platoville appear after their sudden deaths in a dormitory on the campus.

The 22 -year -old Kelsey Martin of Beloy and Hali L. Helms, 22 years old, from Barabo, and they both lived in Wilgus Hall, the place of shooting on May 19, which left both students, the university said.

Martin died of a firearm and Helms died of a self -inflicted firearm, while no one else was involved in the incident, according to police.

Women have finished only two days earlier, according to a starting program. Martin graduated from Summa Cum Laude with a major in psychology, and Helms graduated from Magna Cum Laude with a degree of elementary education.

More than 24 hours after the shooting, the university announced details of the incident, which led to a temporary locked campus.

What do we know about Kelsey Martin

Martin has been an assistant director at Wilgus Hall since 2023, according to her LinkedIn profile. This meant that she was the leading head of the hostel, watching eight to 12 assistants for residents, she wrote in LinkedIn.

She is present at weekly meetings, holds working hours and “responds to various emergencies in the hall”, including mental health problems, hatred and bias, campus policy and others, according to her profile.

Martin has completed psychology with a focus on human services, according to a Facebook publication from the Life Residence Division, which screened it in 2024. She owns more than 400 books and wants to have a library in her home one day, the publication said.

She was a “growing leader and role model for young women in the campus,” the publication said. This praised her “phenomenal work” of her position in the hostel.

In the publication, Martin was quoted that she had applied for the job because “I wanted to help people in the same way that Ra helped me in my first year on the campus.”

Before taking on the role of a supervisory authority, Martin was a resident assistant in Melcher Hall, according to another Residence Life Post. She wanted to get out of her shell and try new things, the publication said, and she developed some of her strongest friendships through work.

Prior to the college, Martin was an assistant manager at Fan Fun Fun Cineter Coral Cove Family Center, an indoor children’s facility in South Beloy, Illinois, according to her LinkedIn.

What do we know about Hali Helms

Helms was preparing for a career in education. She created a personal website for herself and her philosophy of teaching, as well as Facebook and X accounts. There, her cover photo was a cartoon with Mrs. Helms’ class in a chalk-like font, and once expressed support for a federal bill that will increase the minimum wage of teachers.

She was inspired by teachers who were enthusiastic and helped her reach her highest potential, she writes, according to an archived copy of her website.

“I want to be a teacher who had helped, advised and inspired a change,” she writes. “I want to change students to better.”

Helms graduated from Barabu High School in 2021 and attended UW-Baraboo before transferring to Platteville in 2023, according to her site. In high school, she joined the Art Club, Computer Club and Alliance for Sexuality Alliance. At college, she was part of a knitting club and ambitious teacher club.

She also said she had collected nail polish bottles – preferring sparkling lacquer and dealing with nail art – and enjoyed fishing, swimming and tourism at Devil’s Lake every summer.
