What is the UL 2218 impact resistance test?
The UL 2218 impact resistance test is performed by Laboratories (UL) to simulate the effects of hail on the roofing materials. The test is aimed at specific areas of shingles, such as edges, angles, joints and areas that are not supported. The class rating is based on the largest steel ball that shingles can withstand without cracking after two strokes in the same place.
Each class is based on a different size of the ball:

Herpes zoster 4 should survive two direct strokes of a steel ball, falling from 20 feet without damage, making it the most difficult evaluation in the UL 2218 system, according to IKO.

Laboratory results relative to real world results
Just because the herpes area receives the resistant assessment does not mean that it is invincible. In the laboratory, not all real world factors are reported, including:

Damage temperature (eg cold temperatures may indicate brittle shingles)

Although these tests are not carried out under the conditions of a storm in the real world, they provide a feeling of how herpes zoster 4 stay in extreme meteorological events. For example:

They also meet the IBHS reinforced roof standard, which is designed to strengthen the roofs against the hurricane and hail damage. Overall, shingles resistant are more than standard asphalt shingles. The price difference is not huge, with GAF noting that shingles are usually worth about 10% to 25% more. Owens Corning calls Class 4 herpes zoster “premium” product that may come at a higher price, so it’s worth planning your roof budget accordingly.
Given that the average cost of replacing a roof varies from $ 5,868 to $ 13,113, spending a little more for shock -resistant shingles can be worth it, especially if you live in an area prone to a storm. These protective shingles can reduce the effects of hail and wind, which can reduce your future repair costs. And if you are planning to stay in your home for a while, the added endurance can make the investment well worth it.
