Ahmedabad Police Commissioner claims that one person survived after the Air India Flight Ai171 crash on Thursday, June 12, according to India News18, Asian News International (Ani) and Hindustine times (HT).

The commissioner told Ani that the passenger was found on the spot 11a and was transported to a local hospital.

Ahmedabad Commissioner, GS Malik, told the Associated Press earlier that “no survivors of the plane crash seems to have survived.” Later, he told News18, a local exit: “My earlier statement was wrongly quoted.”

News 18 and HT have identified the survivor as a 40-year-old British national national Vishush Kumar Ramesh.

“One person was found alive,” the commissioner said, according to News18. “He is currently undergoing hospital treatment. Doctors are carefully monitoring their condition.”

Vishwash has suffered “impact injuries” to the breast, eyes and legs, according to News18 and HT. He visited a family in India with his brother Ajay Kumar Ramesh, 45 years old, and returned to the United Kingdom when the crash took place.

“Thirty seconds after departure, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed,” he said at the exit of his hospital bed. “Everything happened so fast.”

There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members aboard the AI171 flight when he crashed on Thursday, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said in a statement shared at X.

The plane, Boeing 787-8, “traveled from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick” when he was “involved in an incident after take-off.”

“Of the passengers, 169 are Indian citizens, 53 are British citizens, there are seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian citizen,” Wilson said. He expressed a “deep grief for this event” on behalf of the airline.

The injured passengers were “taken from local authorities to the closest hospitals,” according to Wilson.

“We are actively working with the authorities on all efforts to respond to emergency,” the CEO said. “A special team of care from Air India is on the way to Ahmedabad to provide additional support.”

Wilson said Air India teams “work around the clock to support passengers, crew and their families, as well as investigators, as much as we can.”
