Joe Walsh, a former Republican member of the Congress, said on Tuesday that he became a Democrat, marking the end of his five -year series as a politically independent after leaving GOP in 2020.
Walsh announced his official affiliation with the Democratic Party in a publication on Tuesday, stating that he had made the decision as he regarded the Republican Party as a threat to the democracy and the rule of law and believes that the victory of GOP requires a “broad coalition of moderate, progressives and, yes, even conservatives.”
“Three words that I never thought I had ever said: I am a Democrat. This former Republican Congressman, a former republican candidate for president, this former tea party champion officially joins the Democratic Party. Bets are just too high to make a democrat.”

Walsh challenged Trump for the GOP nomination in the presidential race in 2020, but dropped out after performing badly in Iow’s cause. He quickly left the party and became Trump’s vocal critic, supporting former President Biden in 2020.
Walsh has not been linked to him in the last five years, but in his publication in the sub -end that Trump critics who endure hope for a third country are deluded.
“Without freedom, democracy and rule of law, America ceases to be. And at the moment, only the Democratic Party is on the side of the three of these basic American values,” he writes.
“Soon there is no third country to be rescued,” he continued. “Currently, the Democratic Party is the lonely defender of democracy and the best hope.”
Walsh acknowledged some questions with the Democratic Party, but said “about democracy and the rule of law to persevere, the Democrats must succeed” – which requires it to become a Big Tent Party and learn how to fight Trump’s GOP.
“Take it from a former Republican fighter,” he writes. “Republicans were fighting to death to win politically and they always believed that the Democrats were gone. I have been a fighter all my life, and if there was once a time when Americans are shouting for a Democratic Party with a battle now.”
He added: “And look, here’s something. We’ll need a huge tent to beat this Republican Party.
Walsh also reflects on his political and personal journey, saying that he is still a “border hawk, a continuous defender of weapons rights and an unwavering defender of freedom of expression. But I am not the same person as 15 years ago or even eight years.”
“I opened my eyes and listened to people who don’t think like me,” he continued. “And in this way, I gained a more understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ’s problems, structural racism, the need for empathy immigration reform, the dangers of climate change and the role of the government should play to help the care for the most nasty and most vulnerable among us.”
Walsh said it was more compassionate and sees the meaning of decency, tolerance, understanding and empathy in politics, saying that only the Democratic Party “Values and Practices of these features”.
“Donald Trump is the oldest of us, and unfortunately the rest of the Republican Party imitates his cruelty, dishonesty and authoritarianism,” he continued. “We are better than what we have seen every day in the last four months.
