Boca Raton to start automated speed application in certain school zones this fall

Boca Raton – Automated cameras will begin to impose speed restrictions in selected school areas in Boca Raton this fall, directing drivers that exceed published restrictions during arrival and dismissal hours.

The initiative will be introduced in two phases during the 2025-2026 school year, starting with three schools in which cameras will automatically issue $ 100 civil fines to drivers, exceeding the limited speed of 10 miles per hour or more during the school area. Unlike traditional traffic tickets, these quotes do not carry points and do not affect insurance percentages, city authorities said.

“Safety is always our top priority,” said police chief Michele Miuchio. “Delaying drivers in the school zones, we are making a proactive step to protect students, pedestrians and the rest of our community.”

The program reflects a worse effort in Florida to take advantage of the technology for dealing with long -standing concerns about excess in areas where children are walking and a wheel to school. This change became possible by the House Bill 657, a state law adopted in 2023, which authorizes the use of automated cameras for application in school zones during the appointed hours.

“This program is strengthening our constant public safety commitment in Boca Raton,” said Mayor Scott Singer. “As a parent, I understand how important it is to know that our students are protected. These cameras are an effective, responsible solution for limiting dangerous driving in areas where our children go and a school wheel.”

City authorities said the decision to adopt the program came after movement studies show frequent speeding in school areas. Such efforts to apply the camera in other cities have been associated with reduced speeding and greater adherence to the published restrictions-the results of Boca Raton employees hope to repeat themselves.

The deployment will happen in two phases, starting with three schools this fall and will expand to four more later during the school year. Below are the places and hours of administration where drivers should expect increased monitoring.

The Redspeed camera system records photographic evidence for each violation, capturing details such as the date, time, location, speed of the vehicle and the number of the registration plate, according to city officials. All data are securely encrypted and sent to a centralized processing server, ensuring the integrity and observance of local, state and federal regulations.
