Portland, Ore. (S)Coin) – Union of farmers and a group of churches covering Oregon, California and Florida have conducted a press conference on Tuesday, issuing their trial against the immigration repression of the Trump administration in sensitive places.
Filed on Monday in Eugene, Oregon, the case disputes the administration’s efforts to end the defense in which immigration agents avoid keeping people in “”sensitive places“Like churches, schools, courts and hospitals.
This practice has existed for decades, according to the court case, noting that on the first day of the second term of President Trump, the Ministry of Interior Security canceled a note issued by former DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorcas in 2020 under the Biden administration, which he acknowledged in the defense of sensitive places.

“But on January 20, 2025, the Trump administration turned the course sharply and arbitrarily, opening sensitive places to apply immigration at the discretion of immigration agents,” Helgren said during a press conference on Tuesday. “Faced with this illegal conversion, in this case the organizations have been judged to protect their ability to maintain their missions and the main freedom of their members.”
The Innovation Laboratory and the Justice Center brought a case on behalf of several organizations, including Oregon Union of Pineros Y Campesinos Unidos Del Norote (PCUN), including the Lutheran Church of Augustana in Portland, Augustusco’s Church in San Francisco.

These organizations have filed the lawsuit against the Minister of Interior Security, Christie November, the acting director of immigration and customs law enforcement Todd Lyons and Pete Flores, the incumbent commissioner for customs and border defense – claims that the administration has violated the first amendment to the US Constitution, the Law on Religious Freedom and the Administrative Freedom Law.

According to the Laboratory for Innovation Lawyers, the removal of defenses “caused a defeat” on the plaintiffs and immigrant communities, who witnessed the “frequent traumatic and freezing activity of ice”.

“These organizations are striving for a more sophisticated nation, in which no one should be forced to withdraw from civic life from fear of deportation or indefinite detention,” Helgren said.
The plaintiffs claim that they cannot perform parts of their missions to support immigrant communities without sensitive location protection.
“Many PCUN members, they have been put in an insolvent situation where they have to choose whether to receive the necessary medical care or to risk retaining immigration. This is damaging their ability to provide their families and continue to work,” said PCUN President Rayna Lopez. “Our mission was hurt because we are no longer able to guarantee that people can be safe, that they come to our offices and that people can be safe, that they come to our events. None of us should live in fear of Trump’s administration.”

“Allowing immigration to sensitive places impedes our ability to fulfill our mission,” Putman said. “Immigration at home for worship defiles a place where people must be and feel safe.”
Regarding his decision to join the case, Putman said: “Protecting our right to fulfill our mission is vital.”

The trial comes as some Oregon’s employees and religious leaders have spoken in support of immigrant communities against the backdrop of the repression of the Immigration Administration.
This includes church leaders such as Reverend Mark Knutson from Augustana Lutheran, who trains congregations on initiatives of the church church of the sanctuary.

Knutson said he tried to accompany a man in arresting Avenue South Makadam’s immigration when a worker at the ice facility told Knutson that he could not accompany him.
“This is what we do as a clergy, we go and we are with people and go to these places. This is the first thing they have ever done,” Knutson said earlier. “Practice is in ice, you can accompany as a clergy, a person who enters to register because you never know what will happen after you are inside.”
In a statement to Koin 6 News on Tuesday, a DHS spokesman said: “We are protecting our schools, places of worship and Americans who are present by preventing crime of crime and members of the band approval of the supervisory authority before taking action in places such as a church or school.
Koin 6 News also turned to immigration and application of customs and duties and border protection.
